Trump’s Pardoning of January 6 Insurrectionist:  The First Steps to Autocracy Have Started

The recent decision by President Donald Trump to pardon over 1,500 individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection has sparked significant controversy and concern. This sweeping act of clemency, executed on his first day back in office, stands in stark contrast to the preemptive pardons issued by former President Joe Biden to his family and members of the January 6 committee.

While Biden’s pardons were aimed at protecting individuals from potential politically motivated retribution, Trump’s pardons appear to be a step toward autocracy, potentially enhancing political violence and granting exemptions for illegal actions.

Biden’s pardons were preemptive measures designed to shield individuals from anticipated political persecution under Trump’s administration. These pardons included figures such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired General Mark Milley, and members of the January 6 committee. Biden’s rationale was to protect these public servants from unjustified and politically motivated prosecutions, emphasizing their service and commitment to the nation.

In contrast, Trump’s pardons were granted to individuals who had already been convicted or charged with crimes related to the January 6 insurrection. These individuals were involved in violent acts against law enforcement, vandalism, and attempts to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election. By referring to these insurrectionists as “patriots” and “hostages,” Trump sought to rewrite the narrative of the Capitol attack, casting the perpetrators as victims of an unjust system.

Trump’s mass pardons represent a troubling step toward autocracy. By absolving individuals who engaged in violent and illegal actions, Trump undermines the rule of law and sets a dangerous precedent. This move signals to his supporters that loyalty to him can override legal consequences, eroding the foundations of democratic accountability.

The pardons are likely to embolden extremist supporters of Trump, potentially leading to an increase in political violence. By framing the insurrectionists as heroes, Trump legitimizes their actions and encourages further acts of defiance against democratic institutions. This could result in a more polarized and volatile political climate, with extremist groups feeling empowered to act without fear of repercussions.

Granting pardons to those involved in the January 6 insurrection effectively provides them with an exemption for their illegal actions. This undermines the efforts of law enforcement and the judicial system to hold individuals accountable for their crimes. It sends a message that political allegiance can shield one from the consequences of unlawful behavior, further eroding trust in the justice system.

The Republican response to Trump’s pardons has been mixed, with some members expressing support and others voicing concern. However, the lack of a unified and forceful condemnation from the party makes them complicit in Trump’s actions. By failing to hold Trump accountable, Republicans risk normalizing the erosion of democratic norms and principles.

In the short term, Trump’s pardons threaten to deepen political divisions and undermine the rule of law. The immediate impact is a sense of injustice and betrayal among those who believe in accountability and democratic principles. In the long term, this move could weaken the foundations of American democracy, making it more susceptible to autocratic tendencies and political violence.

The pardons also raise questions about the future of presidential clemency. If used as a tool for political gain rather than justice, the pardon power could become a means of undermining the very principles it was designed to uphold. This could lead to a loss of faith in democratic institutions and a decline in the rule of law.

Trump’s decision to pardon the January 6 insurrectionists marks a dangerous shift toward autocracy, with far-reaching implications for American democracy. By comparing these pardons to Biden’s preemptive clemency, it becomes clear that Trump’s actions are aimed at consolidating power and undermining democratic accountability. The potential for increased political violence, the exemption of illegal actions, and the complicity of the Republican Party all contribute to a troubling future for American democracy. It is imperative that democratic institutions and principles are upheld to prevent further erosion of the rule of law and to protect the integrity of the nation.

Biden pardoning his family and cronies… For crimes we don’t even know about… That doesn’t bother you at all?

There’s no evidence that any of Biden’s family members have committed any crimes outside of Hunter Biden. Nor is there any evidence that members of the January 6th committee have done so also. These are preemptive pardons to shield them from Trumps constant threats of investigations and imprisonment. He has threatened to do that innumerable times. And Trumps first steps shows that he is willing to gut whole government agencies and replace them with loyalist. Republicans have not shown any inclination beyond lip service to restrain Trump’s more autocratic tendencies. The Supreme Court is in his pocket. And so are both houses of congress.

Biden’s pardons preserve the last wall of conscientious morality and opposition to Trumps autocratic ambitions. The pardoning of the January sixth insurrectionists included those who committed violent crimes that day. It shows that Trump is protecting his loyal army. The pardons signal that Trump has got there back. They are his shadow army ready to go to battle on Trump’s ok. Should the armed forces refuse to commit illegal orders,(such as shooting citizens legally protesting his policies and actions, or using the army for immigrant roundups) they would fill in the gap. These Trump extreme loyalist have demonstrated that they want and are willing to start a civil war. So by comparison, Biden’s pardons are necessary, significant and essential to prevent this. These are people who are willing to peacefully and legally protect our democracy from Trump’s autocratic threats. Even the electorate beyond Trump’s loyalist base is starting to voice regrets.

By amplifying the crimes of the J6ers you blatantly overlook the actual rioting that rocked our country in 2020, resulting in billions in property damage and, unlike J6, actual loss of lives. You overlook the actual violent criminals that Biden has pardoned. Not to mention the violent criminals his allies at the state and city level refuse to prosecute.

By claiming fear of legal retribution you blatantly ignore how Biden and his allies have dragged Trump and his allies through the courts. The most outrageous example of this being the persecution of the J6ers. Insurrection? They were trespassing!

Gutting government agencies. Biden certainly did that and staffed them with jesters and activists. You blatantly ignore the selective enforcement and billion dollar handouts and the flood of executive orders that radically transformed the country and parts of the world.

You’re scared, understandably so. Trump threatens the world order you’ve come to take for granted. But when you complain about his tactics, remember you have Bush, Obama, and Biden to thank for setting the precedent. If you didn’t speak out then, please remain quiet now.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. It’s important to have open discussions about these issues. While I understand your concerns, I believe it’s crucial to address the actions of individuals involved in the January 6 insurrection, as they posed a direct threat to our democratic process. The events of 2020 and the actions of various political figures are also significant and deserve attention, but they do not diminish the seriousness of the January 6 events.

It’s essential to hold all individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of political affiliation. Constructive dialogue and mutual respect are key to finding common ground and addressing the challenges we face as a nation.

I’m not interested in having a flame war on this topic. I have stated my opinion and you have done the same for yours. I respect your opinion via posting your reply. Let’s just agree to disagree. Thanks for reading and responding to my blog post. I value you as a reader of my blog.

I prefer my readers to make up their minds. Any further discussion will just result in more negativity. That is not what I want for my blog. Nor what the majority of my readers want to see from my blog. Rexpectfully, I’m closing this post to any further comments. Again, thank for reading my blog and caring enough to respond.
