REVIEW:

“Blink Twice,” starring Channing Tatum and directed by Zoe Kravitz, is a compelling psychological thriller that offers a mix of suspense, introspection, and drama. The film explores themes of memory and trust, delivering a thought-provoking experience that is both engaging and occasionally uneven.

Channing Tatum stars as Jake Harper, a former soldier suffering from amnesia. As Jake begins to piece together fragments of his past, he becomes entangled in a complex web of deception and danger. Tatum’s performance is one of the film’s highlights, showcasing his ability to convey vulnerability and determination. He brings depth to the character, making Jake’s journey both believable and emotionally resonant.

Zoe Kravitz’s direction is stylish and assured, effectively creating a tense and atmospheric mood throughout the film. Her use of visual storytelling, along with the haunting cinematography by Adam Newport-Berra, adds a layer of intrigue and suspense that enhances the overall viewing experience. However, the script, written by E.T. Feigenbaum and Kravitz sometimes falters with predictable plot twists and occasional pacing issues.

The film delves into the concept of memory and its impact on identity and relationships. The possession theme prevalent in Korean horror thrillers is effectively adapted here, with the story exploring the psychological effects of memory loss and the struggle to uncover the truth. The interplay between Jake and his estranged wife, played by Geena Davis , adds an emotional dimension to the narrative, highlighting the complexities of trust and betrayal.

While the central mystery is intriguing, the narrative sometimes loses momentum, with certain plot points feeling formulaic. Despite these shortcomings, the film’s strong performances and atmospheric direction keep viewers invested in Jake’s journey.

“Blink Twice” earns a B rating for its captivating lead performance, stylish direction, and thought-provoking premise. While it may not be a perfect thriller, it offers enough suspense and emotional depth to make it a worthwhile watch.

Blink Twice is streaming as part of Amazon Prime.
