After Santa Claus — Code Name: RED ONE — is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security (Dwayne Johnson) must team up with the world’s most infamous bounty hunter (Chris Evans) in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas.
REVIEW:

In the latest holiday blockbuster, “Red One,” director Jake Kasdan delivers a unique blend of action, comedy, and Christmas magic. This film, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and J.K. Simmons, takes viewers on a thrilling ride through a world where Christmas myths are cleverly and inventively woven into the plot.

The novelty of seeing Santa Claus as a bench-pressing, snickerdoodle-cookie-loving hero is undeniably entertaining. The action sequences, particularly those involving Santa’s high-tech sleigh and reindeer, are visually stunning and exciting . They’re so good that the film sometimes struggles to balance its action with the heartwarming elements . Red One occasionally feels like another holiday movie wrapped in Valentine paper.

Dwayne Johnson’s character, Callum Drift, is a departure from the typical elf characters found in holiday movies. As the head of North Pole security, Callum is a tough, no-nonsense figure who is grappling with a crisis of faith in their mission. This portrayal is a stark contrast to the whimsical, cheerful elves we are used to seeing. Johnson brings his signature charisma and physicality to the role, making Callum a memorable and compelling character.

J.K. Simmons’ portrayal of Santa Claus is one of the film’s highlights. Unlike the traditional soft, jolly Santa, Simmons’ version is a fit, intelligent leader who spends as much time in the gym as he does in his workshop. This fresh take on Santa is both amusing and effective, providing a new perspective on the beloved character. Simmons’ performance is both humorous and heartfelt, making his Santa one of the most memorable in recent years.

Jake Kasdan, known for his work on “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” brings his experience with action-comedy to “Red One.” His direction ensures that the film is fast-paced and visually engaging. The action scenes are well-choreographed, and the special effects are impressive. However, Kasdan’s focus on spectacle sometimes comes at the expense of the film’s emotional core. The movie’s attempt to juggle multiple genres and tones can feel overwhelming, leaving some of the more heartfelt moments underdeveloped..

“Red One” is a bold and inventive take on the Christmas movie. While it may not fully capture the magic of the holidays, it offers plenty of action, humor, and a fresh perspective on familiar characters. With standout performances from Dwayne Johnson and J.K. Simmons, and Jake Kasdan’s dynamic direction, “Red One” is a festive adventure worth watching.

Red One gets a B+ or a 3.5/5.
