REVIEW:

In Jacques Audiard’s latest film, Emilia Pérez, the director ambitiously blends comedy, musical, crime, and drug drama into a single narrative. The result is a daring and often exhilarating cinematic experience that, while occasionally uneven, showcases some remarkable performances, particularly from its female leads.

Karla Sofía Gascón delivers a tour de force performance in the titular role. As Manitas Del Monte, a feared drug lord grappling with gender dysphoria, and later as Emilia Pérez, a philanthropist seeking redemption, Gascón’s portrayal is both powerful and nuanced. Her ability to convey the internal struggle and transformation of her character is nothing short of extraordinary. Gascón’s singing voice adds another layer to her multifaceted performance, making her a standout in this complex role..

Selena Gomez, as Jessi, the wife of Manitas, brings depth to her character, portraying a woman torn between her past and her present. Gomez’s performance is both heartfelt and raw, capturing the emotional turmoil of a mother trying to protect her children while dealing with her own demons.

Zoe Saldana, as Rita, the ambitious attorney, delivers a compelling performance that anchors the film. Saldana’s portrayal of a woman caught in the crossfire of crime and justice is both strong and vulnerable, making her character’s journey one of the most engaging aspects of the film.

Jacques Audiard’s direction is bold and inventive. He successfully navigates the film’s various genres, creating a unique narrative tapestry. The musical numbers, while sometimes jarring, add a surreal quality to the film that enhances its emotional impact. Audiard’s decision to shoot the film on Parisian soundstages, recreating the streets of Mexico City, adds a layer of artificiality that contrasts with the raw emotions of the characters.

However, the film’s ambitious genre-blending does lead to some tonal inconsistencies. The shifts between comedy, musical, and crime drama can be abrupt, and not all elements meld seamlessly. Despite this, Audiard’s vision and the strength of the performances keep the film grounded and compelling..

Emilia Pérez is a film that takes risks and, for the most part, succeeds. The stellar performances of its female leads, particularly Karla Sofía Gascón, and Jacques Audiard’s daring direction make it a memorable cinematic experience. While the blending of genres may not always be smooth, the film’s heart and ambition shine through, making it a must-watch for those seeking something truly ambitious.

Emilia Perez gets a 3.5/5 or a B+. It’s steaming on Netflix.
