In May, he planted potatoes.

He drew the furrows with

a five teeth rake; filled in

the holes, the long patches

with ash mixed with sprouts;

buried them deep one by one

until the clean wore off

his gloves and the ash

covered them gray; until

they absorbed the insipid,

musty smell of earth

and everything he

would ever need bury,
