REVIEW:

Brides,” directed by Nadia Fall, is a deeply moving drama that explores the themes of friendship, freedom, and the search for belonging. The film follows two teenage girls, Doe ( Ebadda Hassan) and Muna (Safiyya Ingar), who run away from their troubled lives in a seaside town with a misguided plan to travel to Syria. Set in 2015, their journey is fraught with danger and self-discovery as they confront the realities of what they’ve left behind and what lies ahead.

Ebada Hassan and Safiyya Ingar deliver standout performances, bringing depth and authenticity to their roles. Their chemistry on screen captures the intensity of their bond and the desperation of their situation. The supporting cast, including Yusra Warsama and Cemre Ebuzziya, adds further layers to the narrative, portraying the complex web of relationships and societal pressures the girls face.

Nadia Fall’s direction is both sensitive and powerful, evoking the thrills and anguish of adolescence. The screenplay by Suhayla El-Bushra is rich with emotional nuance, balancing moments of euphoria and heartache. The cinematography by Clarissa Capellani beautifully captures the contrasting landscapes of Wales, Turkey, and Italy, enhancing the film’s emotional impact.

“Brides” is a poignant and visually stunning film that resonates deeply with its exploration of youth, identity, and the longing for a place to belong. It’s a must-watch for those who appreciate heartfelt storytelling and powerful performances.
