REVIEW:

Back in Action” starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, is a fun and familiar ride that’s currently streaming on Netflix. Directed by Seth Gordon, this action-comedy reunites the two stars, who first worked together in Oliver Stone‘s 1999 sports drama “Any Given Sunday” and later in the 2014 movie musical “Annie.”

The plot follows former spies Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz), who have retired to a quiet suburban life with their two kids. However, their peaceful existence is disrupted when they are pulled back into the world of espionage to retrieve a powerful device that could cause widespread chaos. The film balances action-packed sequences with humorous moments, creating an entertaining mix of thrills and laughs.

Foxx and Diaz’s chemistry is one of the film’s highlights. Their easy banter and comfortable on-screen presence make their characters’ relationship believable and enjoyable to watch. Foxx brings his usual charisma and comedic timing, while Diaz shines in her return to the big screen, effortlessly slipping back into her action-star persona.

However, the plot has its ups and downs. While the action scenes are well-executed and the humor is often spot-on, some of the plot points feel predictable and clichéd. The film relies heavily on familiar tropes from the spy genre, which can make it feel a bit formulaic at times.

Netflix

Gordon’s direction is solid, but the film could have benefited from more originality in its storytelling. The directorial choices, such as the use of ironic song choices during action scenes, add a quirky touch but also highlight the movie’s reliance on tried-and-true formulas.

Netflix

Overall, “Back in Action” is a solid B+ movie that delivers on its promise of fun and excitement. It’s a great watch for fans of Foxx and Diaz, offering a nostalgic trip down memory lane with a fresh twist.

We started watching this a few days ago, and after the first half hour, I just couldn’t continue. The plot was too predictable, and the action felt overly computerized and boring. It’s disappointing because I was really hoping to enjoy the movie.

For the first twenty minutes I felt the same way. But once it got over its long winded set up it started to groove in the family (kid) dynamics of the two spies and Foxx and Diaz found their chemistry and comic timing. Diaz was in particular a delight here. I think the action scenes were meant to be gloss to show the two and the audience the need to concentrate on their family life over their jobs. Not particularly deep film, but a fun family one. Except for the set up.
