Sir Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” follows the epic journey of George (Elliott Heffernan), a 9-year-old boy in World War II London whose mother Rita (Saoirse Ronan) sends him to safety in the English countryside. George, defiant and determined to return home to his mom and his grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller) in East London, embarks on an adventure, only to find himself in immense peril, while a distraught Rita searches for her missing
REVIEW:

Blitz, directed by Steve McQueen, is a poignant exploration of the human spirit during one of history’s darkest times. The film intertwines the parallel stories of Rita (Saoirse Ronan) and her son George (Elliott Heffernan), set against the backdrop of the Blitz in World War II London.

The narrative follows Rita, a factory worker and volunteer, and her son George, who is sent to the countryside for safety but decides to return home. Rita’s story is one of endurance and sacrifice, reflecting the struggles of many women during the war. She faces the daily horrors of bombings while maintaining her duties and searching for her missing son. George’s journey, on the other hand, is a harrowing adventure of survival and determination. His experiences highlight the innocence and resilience of children in wartime.

While both stories are rooted in survival, they differ in perspective. Rita’s tale is grounded in the responsibilities and fears of adulthood, whereas George’s is a child’s quest for safety and reunion. Together, they paint a comprehensive picture of the war’s impact on families.

The film’s central theme is resilience in the face of adversity. The Blitz serves as a powerful backdrop, emphasizing the constant threat and destruction that Londoners endured. This setting not only provides historical context but also amplifies the characters’ struggles and triumphs. The war is not just a backdrop but a character in itself, shaping the lives and decisions of Rita and George.

Saoirse Ronan delivers a compelling performance as Rita, capturing the character’s strength and vulnerability. Her portrayal is both nuanced and powerful, making Rita’s pain and determination palpable. Elliott Heffernan, as George, is equally impressive. His performance is a blend of innocence and bravery, making his journey both heart-wrenching and inspiring.

Steve McQueen’s direction is both a strength and a weakness of the film. His choice to focus on the personal stories within the larger historical context is commendable, providing an intimate look at the war’s impact. However, some scenes feel overly stylized, which can detract from the narrative’s emotional weight. McQueen’s experimental flair is evident, but it sometimes clashes with the film’s more grounded moments.
Compared to McQueen’s previous films like 12 Years a Slave and Shame, Blitz is more focused on personal and familial bonds rather than broader social issues. However, it retains his signature style of intense, character-driven storytelling. The film’s exploration of race and identity, particularly through George’s experiences, parallels themes in McQueen’s Small Axe series.

George’s mixed-race identity adds another layer to the narrative. His journey exposes both acceptance and prejudice in wartime Britain. The film does not shy away from depicting the racism he faces, but it also highlights moments of kindness and solidarity. This duality reflects the complex social dynamics of the time.

Blitz is a moving and visually stunning film that captures the essence of human resilience. Despite some stylistic missteps, McQueen’s direction and the stellar performances of Ronan and Heffernan make it a compelling watch.

I would rate it a B+ or 3.5/5. It’s streaming on Apple TV +.
