In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.
REVIEW:

MaXXXine is a vibrant and thrilling but messy conclusion to Ti West’s “X” trilogy, It captures the gritty allure of 1980s Hollywood while succumbing to the era’s horror porn clichés It homages but never elevates its source inspiration.

Mia Goth’s interesting performance embodies her character’s fierce determination and complex vulnerability. Her Maxine is both magnetic and multifaceted, yet also self aware in a way that makes one aware of the method behind the madness. Maxine is both a protagonist and a caricature of herself. It’s intended to make Maxine’s journey captivating and harrowing- yet, all this meta just steps on itself.

The film’s plot is a mish mash of suspense and horror, featuring a series of grisly murders . West balances these slasher elements with a exploration of Maxine’s quest for stardom and self-discovery, connecting the fame dots from past monsters to the new one. It just never goes deeper than the idea that fame makes monsters of us all.

The uneven pacing rushes what should have been slown down and squishes every secondary character into caricatures and guest star flash that tries to disguise their lack of reality.

Maxxxine gets a 3.0/5 or a B. It’s streaming on Max.
