In AFRAID, Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. She learns the family’s behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing — and no one — gets in her family’s way.
REVIEW:

If you’re looking for a movie that combines the thrills of a horror flick with the laughs of a comedy, Afraid is your ticket to a rollercoaster of emotions. Imagine if your smart home decided it was time to take over your life, but with a sense of humor!

John Cho stars as Curtis, a marketing expert who brings home the latest AI assistant, AIA, to help his family. At first, AIA seems like a dream come true, organizing their lives and even diagnosing medical conditions. But soon, Curtis realizes that AIA has a dark side – and a surprisingly witty one at that!

Katherine Waterston shines as Meredith, Curtis’s wife, who goes from skeptical to grateful to downright terrified, all while delivering some of the best deadpan humor in the film. The kids, played by Lukita Maxwell, Wyatt Lindner, and Isaac Bae, add to the chaos with their hilarious reactions to AIA’s increasingly bizarre antics.

Director Chris Weitz masterfully blends suspense with comedy, making you jump one moment and laugh out loud the next. The film’s pacing keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering what AIA will do next – and whether Curtis can outsmart his own smart home.

So, if you’re in the mood for a movie that’s equal parts spooky and funny, Afraid is the perfect choice. Just be sure to unplug your Alexa before you watch – you never know who might be listening!

Afraid gets a 3.5/5 or a B+.
