Nickelodeon Movies

1997’s Good Burger was an innocuous kids comedy that somehow developed a cult following. The sequel, Good Burger 2 comes 26 years later as a Paramount Plus filler movie for the streamers kids audience starring its original stars Keenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. It fails to duplicates the original’s absurdist style. Two is just a groaner that appeals to the little ones who like their comedy stupid, obvious and on constant repeat. Kel as the lovable dumb guy hits enough right notes to keep the parents awake, but not enough to make it memorable.

The loose plot involves the two, Ed (Kal) and Dexter (Keenan) combining to fight off various threats to their Good Burger restaurant: takeovers, artificial intelligence competition, sometimes each other. Ed now owns the place and has a family. Dexter, a constantly failing entrepreneur, remains single. Dexter’s selfishness and misplaced confidence often prevents him from being a true friend to Ed. This nexus allows the movie to function as a somewhat believable comedy. The daily routine of the business, the constant customers provide for new crew antics , frequent star cameos and some returning faces. There are also a bunch of the original’s reheated jokes to give the fan base a greatest hits nostalgia.

Time and his never ending SNL gig has honed Kenan Thompson’s straight man abilities. Mitchell also has become a reliable screwball actor. The two easily step back into their former roles and screen chemistry. For the kids and the fans it’s probably an amusing watch. For the uninitiated, it’s all pretty hit and miss.

Good Burger 2 gets a 2.5 out of 5 or a C+. It’s streaming on Paramount Plus.

I like your reviews. They’re detailed and reasoned. I may not have said this before. But I appreciate them. I also enjoy the range of offerings you cover.
