Review:

The Wrath of Becky is the sequel to Becky, a horror revenge flick from 2020. Itโs not necessary to see the original. Itโs summarized in pastiche during the wrath sequences.

The villains are a regurgitated version of the original. Think, neo-Nazis doing what the old Nazi cinema villains did with less fashion style, intelligence and weaponry and youโll get the idea of how easy dispatching these idiots is for the self trained female avenger. The only slightly innovative idea- these Noble Men, as they call their group, are founded, funded and led by an ignoble Southern woman (Jill Larson). She would be a Grand Dragon in the male Ku Klux Klan, if they allowed female domination.

Lulu Wilson as Becky is so bored with them, she even has fantasies of dispatching these idiots in imaginative ways. She is pissed that she has to make-do with the ordinary shit laying around. The second line villain, played by the mainly comic schlub Sean William Scott, is suppose to be an ex-Navy Seal, but apparently fell asleep during the killing the enemy lessons. Scott exudes menace as if he took a crash course on how to be a movie villain. Even Becky can out stare him.

Becky has an attack dog sidekick a la John Wick. The beast is threatened with various forms of euthanasia from baseball bats to knives to guns but never succumbs. He does get several sequences showing off his good dog attack skills.

Becky, done up in red boiler suit, once the action gets going, choses to follow the rote rhythm of this kind of avenging drama. To the filmโs credit, the killings are somewhat inventive, even though the fantasy ones do undercut the grimness of the real dispatchings. At 83 minutes it moves quickly and efficiently, and the cat and mouse plotting does have some mildly entertaining twists and turns.

Lulu Wilson as Becky is consistently terrific. She deserves better material. Hopefully it wonโt be the even lamer sequel if the box office pans out.

The Wrath of Becky gets a 3.0 out of 5 or a B. Itโs streaming on Showtime.
