Project Hail Mary” begins with a lone man in a sealed room, immediately immersing you in the captivating world of outer space. Ryan Gosling’s Ryland Grace wakes up in a metallic cocoon that hums with a mixture of fear and hope, and directors Jan Phil Lloyd and Harold Miller beautifully highlight that tension. They recognize how space can be daunting, yet also hold an irresistible allure filled with beauty, mystery, and wonder. From the very start, the film confidently balances these two feelings, drawing viewers in with its inviting sense of adventure.

The setup is one of those reassuring premises that really highlight the movie’s optimistic spirit. For a nice change, humanity isn’t the culprit behind the crisis. Instead, an alien organism is consuming energy and gradually extinguishing stars. The Sun begins to fade, and a Petrova line reaches from the Sun to Venus. The stakes are incredibly high, yet the film approaches this cosmic disaster with a tone that feels almost charmingly quaint—especially considering the lack of unity around the environmental challenges we face here on Earth. That charming touch adds to the film’s overall appeal.

Suspending disbelief feels a bit more natural with science fiction, but accepting the sudden global teamwork that kicks off Project Hail Mary is a different story. The film understands this and embraces it warmly. Instead of resisting, it celebrates the dream of international unity, using the hopefulness to balance out the darker aspects of the story. The end result is a world that seems a little gentler, yet still packed with a sense of urgency and purpose.

The flashbacks to Earth, where Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) recruits Grace, have a clear and steady style. They remind us of Denis Villeneuve’sArrival,” especially in how they show scientific work as a heartfelt dedication. These scenes help ground the story and add depth to the moral questions, since Grace’s participation is both his choice and pressured. The film doesn’t focus too much on this tension, but it leaves a gentle impression of it.

Once Grace meets the alien pilot he names Rocky, the film gently shifts into a more adventurous tone. The directors warmly explore the excitement of first contact, and the scenes between Grace and Rocky are filled with a tender curiosity that keeps the story lively and engaging. James Ortiz’s vocal and puppeteering work gives Rocky a vivid, tangible presence, making him feel real and relatable. The translation machine, their shared problem-solving, and the growing trust all beautifully highlight the film’s hopeful message.

In 2020, Weir shared the unpublished manuscript with Gosling, hoping he would star in an adaptation. Gosling embraced the role, and his heartfelt performance adds a genuine emotional depth to the film. He portrays Grace as a man driven by a desire to do the right thing, even when he’s uncertain if he’s truly deserving of the responsibility. It’s easy to root for him and to wish the best for both him and Earth. Watching his scenes with Rocky only makes us more invested in his journey.

This alliance has its charms, though it starts to feel a bit too sweet. The early tonal balance — a mix of seriousness, comedy, fear, and wonder — begins to lean. As the film progresses, especially in the middle, it becomes more reminiscent of Spielberg’s style, and the emotional moments become more exaggerated. While this shift doesn’t ruin the film, it does make its sharper edges a bit smoother and softer.

As the mission explores the mysteries of Tau Ceti, the film beautifully highlights its strengths. Discovering the Taumoeba organism, the daring descent toward Adrian, and the tough choice Grace faces between returning home or saving Rocky’s world—all these moments are rich with genuine drama. The directors skillfully focus on problem-solving and sacrifice, rather than just flashy spectacle. The film’s optimism feels natural and integral, not merely a sentimental touch.

Even so, “Project Hail Mary” is still a wonderfully engaging adventure. It captures the captivating allure of outer space and the fears that come with exploring the unknown. It gently encourages hope, all the while acknowledging the challenges that come along with it. Gosling brings a calming presence to the film, and the directors craft a story that celebrates teamwork, curiosity, and the hope of rescue. While it leans into a gentle tone at times, it heartfeltly earns its optimistic spirit.
