John M. Chu’s Wicked for Good is a lavish and audacious continuation of the Oz world. It weaves Baum’s whimsical luster, the enchanting glow of the 1939 film, and Gregory Maguire’s gritty reimagining into a colorful tapestry.

Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba takes over with the kind of voice you could hardly hear in a live theater. She breathes life into this spirit of rebellion.  I’m sure her soul is as electrifying as Elphaba is capable of being.  Her character is the movie’s moral backbone, particularly in heartbreaking moments when her determination to promote animal rights is pitted against the loss of a friend. Ariana Grande’s Glinda cuts to the chase on many levels of privilege versus conscience.   She is fierce, polished, in her usual self-satisfied pose as the Wizard’s charismatic mouthpiece, as she grapples with the inner conflicts of her emotions concerning Elphaba’s choices. Their relationship is the most compelling narrative thread in the story: friendship forged in youthful competition, tested by betrayal, and then sealed in an emotional farewell that pays tribute to Baum’s whimsical charm while also embracing Maguire’s darker, more convoluted view of these characters.

Their relationship is what makes the story engaging. Their friendship begins in youthful enmity and ends in betrayal. It is finally wrapped up in a heartfelt farewell that balances Baum’s whimsical charm and Maguire’s more cynical, intricate vision.  Elphaba’s elegant yet complex story is the primary focus, though.  She is the brave and adventurous revolutionary who stands up to oppressive forces. It’s essential that clashes with Dulcibear, a gentle but resilient creature, and Dr. Dillamond, a professor silenced by institutionalized bigotry, show that the pursuit of animal equality is the moral core of the story. The systematic silencing of Dillamond and the exile of Dulcibear—symbolizing innocence—echo authoritarian methods— the propaganda and spectacle that conceal the systemic cruelty. Jeff Goldblum’s Wizard embodies this duplicity through his sneaky, manipulative charm.   His paternal revelation of his true nature adds a note of sadness to his character’s story.   And Michelle Yeoh’s Madame Morrible, who has sto-like powers and the authority embodied in tyrannical jurisdiction, is the tornado metaphor for the state’s destructive violence against innocent lives.

The blending of Oz’s iconic characters, both winners and losers, makes for a tale with multiple layers. Boq’s agonizing journey into Tin Man is depicted with heartbreaking poignancy.  His gaunt, rusty heart becomes an allegory for his relinquished control and emotional well-being. It represents his internal conflict. Jonathan Bailey‘s regrowth as Fiyero in the Scarecrow offers a profound reflection on sacrifice and transformation. His unwavering love for Elphaba endures, but is reframed to express themes of adaptation, devotion, and survival. Dorothy is softly subdued.  Her face is covered during pivotal scenes.    This maintains the time-honored mystique of the 1939 movie while keeping the Glinda and Elphaba relationship the primary focus. The Cowardly Lion’s cautious, tentative tone adds texture. Yet his arc is underdeveloped, leaving him for more complex moral quandaries and soul-searching.

As a musical, Wicked for Good engages with arresting staging, elaborate sets, and warm lighting, pure theatrical grandeur.  The more polished ensemble numbers are slightly removed and emotionally distant.   Chu’s direction is all about spectacle. His sprawling camera angles and sparkling visual effects dazzle the senses., that at times,  overpowers the intimacy.  Still, the climactic duets between Elphaba and Glinda — particularly ‘For Good’ — approach an uncanny intimacy in which voice, gesture, and emotion meet perfectly.

The film is rich territory for exploring the trap of evil masquerading as good.  Beneath the veneer of virtue lie dark motivations that generate moral tension. The tenuous ties of friendship are depicted through heated strife and betrayal among close aides and characters.   The main characters sacrifice everything in search of the real story. They defy the well-trodden path of propaganda and manipulation. Morrible’s advanced weather-control technology and rumour-mongering echo contemporary propaganda tools that attempt to mold public thinking through misinformation and fear. Its argument of truth to power is its most powerful statement, “We must give animals equality,” which is highly suggestive of today’s struggle for minority equality. It shows that true resistance starts from listening and speaking out.

The last chapter offers a haunting close. The staged death of Elphaba and Glinda’s rise as the rightful leaders of Oz further underscores the importance of self-sacrifice and self-discovery as forms of personal growth. It shows in Glinda’s deeply felt investment in seeing Elphaba’s truth and legacy endure — at any cost to her reputation, her political power, and her sense of well-being. It reimagines Glinda as a moral leader driven by privilege and a sense of ethical responsibility. When Glinda encounters the Grimmerie, the movie shows that the future of Oz will be composed of knowledge about collective memory, moral duty, and teachings from the past.

Universal Pictures

By turning Oz into a place where actions have real consequences and where ideas of friendship, resistance, and lying are wrapped up in an almost organic whole, Wicked for Good gets its proper ending.   The movie is more than just an average musical.  In the balance between mourning and hope, it succeeds.
