MOVIE INFO:

Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner ANORA is an audacious, thrilling, and comedic variation on a modern day Cinderella story. Mikey Madison (ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD) captivates as Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn whose life takes an unexpected turn when she meets and impulsively marries Vanya, the impetuous son of a Russian billionaire. However, when Vanya’s parents catch wind of the union, they send their henchmen to annul the marriage, setting off a wild chase through the streets of New York.

Sean Baker’s latest film, “Anora,” is a   genre-blending win.  It seamlessly transitions from a profane romantic comedy to a gangster comedy, and ultimately, a tragicomedy. This film is a testament to Baker’s unique storytelling ability, reminiscent of his previous works like “Tangerine” and “The Florida Project,” but with a fresh, audacious twist.

“Anora” begins as a romantic comedy, introducing us to Ani (Mikey Madison), a vivacious sex worker navigating the gritty streets of Brooklyn. The film’s initial tone is light-hearted and comedic, filled with witty banter and humorous situations. However, as Ani’s relationship with Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn), the son of a Russian oligarch, deepens, the film shifts into a gangster comedy. The introduction of Ivan’s family and their criminal undertakings adds layers of tension and absurdity, culminating in a series of chaotic, yet darkly humorous, events. Finally, the film transitions into a tragicomedy, exploring the emotional depths of Ani’s journey and the consequences of her choices.

Like Baker’s previous films, “Anora” focuses on marginalized characters and their struggles. However, it stands out for its bold narrative choices and genre experimentation. While “Tangerine” and “The Florida Project” were grounded in realism, “Anora” embraces a more fantastical, almost fairy-tale-like quality, reminiscent of a modern-day Cinderella story.

Sex and sexual dynamics play a crucial role in “Anora.” Ani’s profession as a sex worker is depicted with nuance and complexity, highlighting the power dynamics and societal stigmas associated with sex work. The film does not shy away from portraying the raw, often transactional nature of Ani’s relationships, but it also humanizes her, showing her vulnerabilities and desires. This portrayal challenges stereotypes and offers a more empathetic view of sex workers.

“Anora” both fulfills and subverts traditional romance and gangster tropes. The film’s romantic elements are unconventional, with Ani and Ivan’s relationship defying typical romantic comedy expectations. Their love story is messy, unpredictable, and deeply flawed, yet it feels genuine and heartfelt. Similarly, the portrayal of the Russian mafia in the film is both stereotypical and refreshingly unique. While the characters exhibit familiar traits of ruthlessness and extravagance, their interactions with Ani add a layer of complexity and humor that sets them apart from typical gangster portrayals.

Mikey Madison delivers a standout performance as Ani. Her portrayal is raw, captivating, and deeply emotional. Madison brings a perfect blend of toughness and vulnerability to the character, making Ani both relatable and compelling. Her chemistry with Mark Eydelshteyn is electric, adding depth to their tumultuous relationship. Madison’s performance is undoubtedly one of the film’s highlights and deserves recognition during awards season.
