Deadpool 2 gives us the inevitable sequel to the indestructible merch with a mouth but also that X-Men movie we kind of sort of wanted and never wanted.
Deadpool 2 doesn’t stop there. The plot does riffs on the Terminator series, Groundhog Day and that James Brolin plays both Thanos and Cable in the same Marvel Universe.
Like the hero played by Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool 2 is all about the meta. The more meta the better. There is no point describing the plot of Deadpool 2 because the jokes and insane action sequences are the only reason for its existence.
The director David Leitch (of the meta friendly Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron starring John Wick and Atomic Blonde films) knows that as well as the committee of 14 screen scribes (one of which is star Reynolds himself). Deadpool 2 is populated with characters that can playoff and “meta”-stasize that feeling very well.
The fact that Deadpool 2 all holds together is amazing. That it works better than the original is remarkable.
