The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is almost a reunion of the Downton Abbey cast. This period piece stars Lily James and fellow Downton alumnae Penelope Wilton, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Matthew Goode. The British are very good at keeping their aging thespians employed lending period authenticity to other historical productions once their BBC cash cows are put to pasture.
Guernsey is a historical post WWII drama/mystery/romance about the after effects both good and bad on the British inhabitants of the island during the German occupation. It is unique because it acknowledges that even during times of war and atrocities that good decent humanity, love even between enemies, can overcome prejudice and could and should be protected.
The film finds a humane, wise and inherently Christian way to reconcile the mistakes of the past with the present and the hopes for the future. Guernsey is the type of film too gentle and charming for the theaters that perfectly hits the sweet spot of the Netflix demographics.
Director Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) does a good job of balancing the history, mystery and the romance. James and the rest of the cast lend reliable support.
Guernsey is the perfect choice for those seeking a Netflix and chill night that is gentle, gentile and very British.
