Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon must have found enough of a character spark to want to have work together in The Spy Who Dumped Me. Dumped Me’s plot is a tiresome retread of spy cliches mixed in with innocents on the loose antics.
Kunis’ and McKinnon’s friendship is an improvisation that revolves around their snarking off events happening to them. Kunis plays the straight man to McKinnon’s wiseass. Dumped Me lives when the two are allowed to let loose. Separated the film stalls until they are brought together.
McKinnon is one of the most talented comedians working today. Almost everything she does in Dumped Me feels improvised and all of it is funny. The characters and plot are McKinnon’s straight man, and except for Kunis, everyone else in the cast can’t keep up.
The Spy Who Dumped Me only works when its smart enough to make it McKinnon’s World.
